It's a bit surprising that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has retained its name, without returning to the original Samsung Galaxy Fold. However, the smartphone released at the end of summer has been named in this way. It smoothly continues the traditions of the previous three generations of "foldable" smartphones, not offering anything radically new (as was the case last time with moisture protection and an invisible front panel when the device is open). However, it does refresh impressions on a number of parameters.
There is a new hardware platform (Qualcomm 8 Gen 1) and an adequate rear camera system (similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S22) for a flagship device, as well as the Android 12.0 operating system, which has been specially designed for larger-format or foldable devices. Additionally, there are a number of other changes that may not be immediately noticeable on the list of specifications, but which nonetheless significantly alter the overall impression of the device. At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 appears to be very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, upon closer inspection, there are some minor differences. The key design elements, such as the bend in the hinge area and the camera block, have remained largely unchanged.
When the device is opened, there is still a noticeable crease around the perimeter of the screen, and the "sides" of the device remain striking. But as you begin to use the device, you will notice that even small changes can have a significant impact. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 has a slightly lower and wider frame than its predecessor, and the frames around the screens have also been reduced. This has resulted in a change in the proportions of the displays, both internal (11.24:9 to 10.8:9) and external (25:9 to 23.1:9). While the interaction with the internal screen in the open position has not changed, the new "fold" in the closed position is much more convenient and functional.
While the smartphone is still a narrow device, it is not as radical as before, and it is much more comfortable to use. You don't need to open the device for every minor task. The frames have also become significantly smaller, with the inner screen occupying 90.9% of the surface, despite being a flat screen and not a waterfall with curved edges. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 boasts a stylish design. Both the hinge and edges are made from aluminum, while the back is covered in a frosted glass that is extremely pleasant to touch. The front part (when folded) is also made of glass. In both cases, Samsung uses the latest generation of Gorilla Glass Victus+.
The camera unit follows Samsung's corporate design, featuring a vertical layout with large optics. It also protrudes slightly above the body, making it stand out.
In terms of functionality, there are several elements in the usual places. There is a thick hinge with a glossy finish and a logo. A power button with fingerprint scanner is located on the side, as well as speakers at the top and bottom. There are also multiple microphones, but there is no traditional 3.5mm
